Strong dark red with bright reflections. Intense, long-lasting bouquet: blackberry, spices (nutmeg) and floral aromas (lilies and a hint of violet), accompanied by a peppermint note. Pleasant freshness, enhanced by an olfactive return of peppermint flavors. Of a beautiful length, with beautifully rounded tannins that accentuate the finish.
Mash for three weeks in wooden containers and steel tanks at controlled temperature. Maturation for about 16 months in French oak barrels.
In 1725, Father Joseph Stanislas Gruaud planted a vineyard and the resulting wines were praised by Abraham Lawton in 1750 for their quality. Château Gruaud Larose received its name at the end of the 18th century when its son-in-law, the Chevalier Joseph-Sébastien Larose, became the only heir to take over the estate. In 1812 he died and left behind the 80 hectare estate, which over the years has become one of the most prestigious estates. The official classification in 1855 confirmed the quality by classifying the estate as one of five 2eme Grand Cru Classé. After his death in 1812, the two families Sarget and Balguérie bought the estate. During this time, the motto of the castle was born: «King of wines, wine of kings».
In 1847, the vineyards were split in half, but reunited in 1935 by Désiré Cordier. He was also the one who saved Château Gruaud-Larose from ruin at the end of the nineteenth century, during the time marked by mildew and phylloxera. His grandson Jean Cordier later took over the work of his grandfather and enlarged the vineyards. In 1983, the Suez group took over the estate, only ten years later, in 1993, it was transferred to Alcatel Alsthom. The new owner invested heavily in the acquisition, the building and the infrastructure (new wine cellars) of Château Gruaud-Larose. She also planted many vineyards at this time and built the beautiful French gardens. Finally Jacques Merlaut, an important merchant from Bordeaux, bought Château Gruaud-Larose in 1997, which he then handed over to his son Jean. Jean Merlaut worked until 2007 with the oenologist Georges Pauli. Today, Eric Boissenot, an Oenologist specializing in Médoc wines, advises the winery. Patrick Frédéric is responsible for the viticulture of Stéphanie Lebaron-Bouchonneau.
The vines stand on quaternary soils that are mainly made of clay, sand, humus and pebbles, which were deposited by the Garonne. The subsoil is characterized by red, blue and yellow tone. The coarse gravel also has good drainage and leaves the vines deep roots so that they can access their nutrients.
