History

The Château Mouton-Rothschild in Pauillac near Bordeaux is one of the most famous wineries in the world. It is located in the north of the municipality Pauillac, which is part of the parent appellation Haut-Médoc.

The estate is owned by the original English branch of the banking dynasty Rothschild. In the evaluation of the wineries of Bordeaux on the occasion of the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855, the position of Mouton was honored with the rank of Deuxième Cru Classé. In 1973, Mouton was re-classified by the then French Minister of Agriculture Jacques Chirac to one of the five goods in the category Premier Cru Classé.

The former owner, Philippine de Rothschild-Sereys (1933-2014) was and her son Phillipe is a member of the Primum Familiae Vini, a worldwide association of traditional, leading family businesses for wine growing and trading. The winery is an honorary member of the 1973 founded Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux.

Terroir

Mouton has 82 hectares of vines, 77% of which are Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Château Mouton-Rothschild is situated on a hill that is up to 30 meters high. The more than eight meters thick gravel layer of this hilltop rests on a limestone base. On this soil, the variety Cabernet Sauvignon thrives excellently.
