The winery Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori. In the picturesque village of Bolgheri in the province of Livorno is the world famous winery. The vineyards of the Ornellaia winery, founded in 1981, cover around 62 hectares. The vineyards, which merge with cypresses and pines, form an unmistakable landscape, which fascinated even the former poet Giosué Carducci. After the founding, it took only seven years for the winery to introduce the first vintage, which conquered the market in 1988. Since 1991, Antinori has been working with oenologist Michel Rolland, who has steadily improved existing manufacturing methods.
In 1991, more vineyards were added, before a new vintage, which bore the name "Le Volte dell'Ornellaia", was published. In 1997, a prestigious second wine, the "Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia", was launched on the market. In 1999, the wine producer Robert Mondavi took over the winery, which he shared a few years later with Marchese Ferdinando Frescobaldi. From now on, Axel Heinz, who initiated the construction of a new drum depot, was the company's new oenologist and production manager. Red wines take on the winery Ornellaia a great importance. At the center of Italian winegrowing is the red noble grape variety Cabernet Sauvignon, which flourishes well not only in the French wine-growing region, but also in the region around Bolgheri. Not entirely unfounded, the 1990s was honored by the "Wine Spectator", a renowned wine magazine, as the best red wine in the world. Extremely concise were the strong body and the balanced tannins that support the storability of the wines.
The diverse nature of the vineyard soils - seabed, alluvial soil and volcanic soil - together with the marine climate create an environment in which red and white grape varieties can fully develop.
