History

Located in Barbaresco, the winery Gaja was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja. Already at the end of the 19th century, the winery delivered wines to the Italian army. Which, however, was unusually true for this time, since bottling did not prevail until the 1960s. Since 1961, the winery is run in the fourth generation by Angelo Gaja. Without losing sight of the traditional values, the thought leader, revolutionary and expert with vision in the rather conservative Piedmont has never rested on his laurels. In the Langhe area, 21-year-old Angelo Gaja took on the challenge of writing history with Barbaresco's production. So it was Angelo Gaja, who introduced the use of barriques and the malolactic fermentation. With his 1996 harvest, he even voluntarily downgraded his wines from the DOCG to the lower DOC level. To keep open the possibility to improve the wine with international grape varieties. However, the trademark of the winery remains the native Piedmont grape variety Nebbiolo, which has again gained in importance and appreciation by the exceptional winemaker. Whoever deals with Barolo and Barbaresco will sooner or later encounter the name Angelo Gaja.
