History

Domaine Berthaut has been a family winery for at least 7 generations.The story begins at the end of the 18th century with François Berthaut's father and a few hectares of vineyards at Fixin, 9 rue Noisot, followed by Firmin Berthaut (1845-1920) and Bernard Berthaut (1879-1913), who died at an early age. His wife Jeanne will run the estate until the majority of their son Guy.Guy took over the estate in 1930. The wines were then sold mainly to wholesalers. After the war, Guy Berthaut began to bottle his wines, expanded the estate with the purchase of the house at 18 rue Noisot and the rental of new plots in the Gevrey-Chambertin commune: Gevrey-Chambertin village appellation and Gevrey- Chambertin Premier Cru.In the 1960s, he built up the export market to the USA.   Vincent and Denis took over from their father Guy Berthaut (1912-2009) in 1974. During their career, Vincent and Denis (trained oenologists) expanded the estate by buying vines in the village of Fixin and Fixin Premier Cru appellations.In 2005, a new cellar, Route des Grands Crus, was built for the ageing of the wines.Amélie, daughter of Denis Berthaut, born of his marriage to Marie-Andrée Gerbet (Domaine François Gerbet in Vosne-Romanée), settled on the family farm in 2013 after studying agricultural engineering and oenology in Bordeaux. Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet was born, combining all the vines of Domaine Berthaut and part of the vines of Domaine Gerbet.In 2017, Nicolas Faure, Amélie's husband, joined the estate as cultivation manager after learning his skills at JL Chave, Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Domaine Prieuré-Roch. At the same time, he created his own estate in 2011.
