This vineyard borders directly on the eastern side of the prelate and is so steep that centuries ago stone stairs were built into the hillside so that the workers could reach the vines better. The wines from the "Wehlener Sonnenuhr" vineyard are very elegant ones, whereby those wines from the "Treppchen" are very robust and masculine. The ferruginous, red slate soil produces wines that taste rich, racy and complex and have an intense mineral aftertaste.
With the 2008 vintage, we then switched the entire maturation of our dry wines back to spontaneous fermentation in wooden barrels. Subsequently, all dry Rieslings were left on the full yeast for twelve months without battonage. From the 2011 vintage we then began to mature the wines from our best and oldest non-grafted sites in three different soils on the full yeast for 24 months. The wines with twelve months of yeast storage are put on the market after bottling, usually from the beginning of November. The wines with 24 months barrel storage are sold after two to three years of bottle storage.
The winery has been family-owned for over 200 years and has been managed by Ernst F. Loosen since 1988. He believes that great wines are the perfect expression of the soil, the climate and the grape variety. With the heritage of his ancestors - true to roots, old vines in the historic Großer Lage of the Middle Moselle - he has found exactly the material he needs to produce independent, complex wines of world standard. Today, Dr. Loosen is regarded internationally as the figurehead of a rediscovered German Riesling culture. The winery has been a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) since 1993.
The south-facing steep slopes and their proximity to the Moselle create a perfect microclimate for our Riesling. The southern slope guarantees sunlight from morning to evening. The stony slate soil, which can be seen on the surface of the vineyard, reflects the sunlight to the grapes during the day and at the same time stores a large part of the heat.
