Deep, shiny ruby to purple. Complex bouquet with luscious aromas of sweet ripe berries (black currants, cranberries, strawberries), cherries and cherry liqueur, mocha, liquorice, truffles and earth next to fine floral notes. Round and powerful on the palate, lots of juicy dark fruit and mineral notes, the luscious tannins give the wine its energetic, straightforward structure and a remarkable fullness.

Vinification / aging

At harvest time, the fully ripe grapes are harvested separately according to grape varieties and placed in temperature-controlled cement tanks, in which the spontaneous fermentation (without addition of artificial yeasts) starts. After completion of mash fermentation, the wines mature for 18 months in new barriques (tapping about every three months), in which they also go through the malolactic fermentation.

History

On this unique terroir, Château Clos l'Eglise (not to be confused with the homonymous Château in Pomerol!) - just a few kilometers as the crow flies away from the famous Château Pavie, which, like Château Clos l'Eglise and other icons, such as the Saint Emilion Château's La Clusière and Monbousquet, belong to the estate of Gérard Perses. Under the guidance of the busy oenologist Michel Rolland, Perse cultivates a modern style of vinification on his estates, which does not always inspire enthusiasm among the traditionalists, which, however, can hardly diminish the international success of the wines.

Terroir

Well water permeable, calcareous-loamy soils with white clay, sometimes also sand and gravel, on a limestone substrate. The plateau of Sainte-Colombe forms the highest point of the Côtes de Castillon.
